Some great Quakers

Frederic Horniman the Tea Merchant and John Cadbury the Chocolate Magnate made their fortunes by refusing to add hedge clippings into their tea blends and brick dust mixed with poisonous red lead into their drinking chocolate mix. Their products were exactly what was written on the tin! Both these men were honest Quakers and people trusted their products implicitly!

It is not surprising that by 1891 the Horniman Tea Company became the largest tea company in the world. John Horniman spent much of his fortune setting up a notable museum for his local fellow beings so that they could get a window on life in other parts of the world.

John Cadbury was as successful but his legacy lies in his philanthropy. He built his workers the village of Bournville and most surprisingly for the time gave them basic medical and dental care. The Bournville estate now covers 1000 acres (4 km²), providing homes for some 25,000 people.

These are but two examples of great Quakers who helped to shape our world. There are so many more such men that we shall be exploring…
