171030 History Talk 30th Oct: Entente Not So Cordiale

Date: Monday 30th Oct 10:30
Location: Salón de Actos, Espai la Senieta, Moraira (next to the large free car park)
Subject: Entente Not So Cordiale: One Thousand Years of Anglo-French Relations, from the Battle of Hastings to Brexit
Lecturer: Peter Atkinson

This presentation will compare Britain and France in terms of their achievements and personalities, and will explore the less-than-harmonious relationship between the two over the centuries.

Events that will briefly be considered include the Norman Conquest and its aftermath, the Hundred Years’ War, the War of the Spanish Succession, the American Revolution, and the Napoleonic Wars. We shall also look at some of the issues that have arisen since the 1904 signing of the Entente Cordiale, a period in which the two nations have (supposedly) been on the same side.

Along the way, we shall indulge in an ever-popular British pastime: having a go at the French. Here, Peter has had the help of many eminent people including Her Majesty the Queen, Lord Nelson, Winston Churchill, LBJ, Margaret Thatcher and Humphrey Appleby.
