2014 Pamela Kershaw Memorial Bowls Challenge
This year’s annual Bowls Challenge was held on March 12th. This competition is held in memory of our late and much loved Vice President, Pamela Kershaw, who was a player and member of the U3A Bowls team.
The weather forecast had been particularly gloomy with rain predicted, but although occasionally the wind was cool, the sun shone for most of the day.
Heats were played on the normal U3A playing days of Mondays and Wednesdays so that on the day of the Final there were eight players from each group.
David & Eileen Haxon, the Wednesday Group Leaders, and Ray & Pauline Durrant, the Monday Group Leaders ran the competition in the same way as last year, as this had been so successful.
Invited guests included Pamela’s husband Gordon Kershaw, Jill Cole, President of the U3A and Nikki Luxford, the local reporter from the Costa Blanca News.
After some very close matches the final was between last year’s winner Ray Durrant and David Bianco. This was watched by about 40 people who thoroughly enjoyed the match, and after a close contest Ray was triumphant once again. Gordon Kershaw presented the cup to the 2014 Champion.
After an excellent lunch, provided by the Inn on the Green, David Haxon gave thanks to all those who had helped organise the day, especially the markers, and to the guests who had attended. Wine was presented to both finalists and to Pat & Mike Dawson who had devised the rules and regulations.
David also presented wine as a thank you gift to the previous Bowls Group Leader, Don Roberts, who had run the Group for the last 5 years, and who originally had the idea of the competition.
Everyone enjoyed the whole day and we look forward to the event in 2015, will Ray Durrant triumph once again?
Margaret Roberts
