THE TASTES OF THE MEDITERRANEAN
Salt, Oil & Wine including a Wine tasting and Tapas
Tuesday 10 March 2020
Led by Malcolm Burman and Lynn Clark
We will depart from Moraira and head for the salt museum in Santa Pola. The museum is set within a 6000 acre park. Salt has been produced in Santa Pola since Roman times and was an essential part of the local economy. The small museum is set in an old salt factory with some of original machinery and explains how salt was extracted, its characteristics and historical usage.
The salt lagoons attract a variety of wildlife, especially flamingos and there are viewing platforms. You will also be able to observe the nature in the Natural Park of Salinas de Santa Pola, with flamingos, white-tailed teal, white jars, spoon ducks, common egrets, yellow tailed gulls and stilts etc. This spectacular reserve is declared a Zone of Special importance for Birds.
After a stop for lunch, we head for the Enrico Mendoza bodega in Alfas de Pi. There will be a tour of the attractive grounds and the wine cellar with an English-speaking guide. This will be followed of course by a tutored tasting session with some tapas. Also included will be Olive Oil tasting. You will also have an opportunity to visit their shop for any purchases you wish to make.
