Film Title: The Death of Stalin
“Armando Iannucci, a virtuoso of political evisceration, turns horror into comedy in this eccentric comic shocker about a strong man and his world of ashes and blood.” [Manohla Dargis – The New York Times]
In the Moscow of early 1953, weighed down under the Great Terror’s heavy cloak of state paranoia, the tyrannical Soviet leader, Joseph Stalin, collapses unexpectedly of a brain haemorrhage. Inevitably, when his body is discovered in the following morning, a frenetic surge of raw panic spreads like a virus in the senior members of the Council of Ministers, as his parasitic cronies square off in a frantic power struggle to become the next Soviet leader. But while they scramble to maintain order, weed out the competition and, ultimately, take power, in the gut-wrenching roller-coaster of incessant plotting, tireless machinations, and frail allegiances, absolutely no one is safe; not even the feared sadistic chief of the secret police, Lavrenti Beria. As they bumble, brawl and back-stab their way to the top, the question remains — just who is running the government? And in the end, who will prevail after the death of Stalin?
