Friends of Avinença trip to Castellón 5-8 April 2016

We are now able to publish in full the details of our forthcoming field trip to northern Castellón, on Tuesday 5th April – Thursday 8th April when we will be visiting Morella, Peñiscola and around.

We hope that you will find that our varied itinerary is of interest and you will join us on this 3 day, two night trip. The details are set out below . . . . .

Day 1, Tuesday 5th  April.

Pick up from Teulada, Gata and Oliva between 08:00 and 09:10

Our first stop will be at  Almenara . . . We will be visiting “Els Estanys”, a project to conserve a wild marsh area with typical marshland flora and plentiful birdlife. Bring binoculars! There will be a chance to eat your pre-packed lunch before we leave for . . . .  Almassora . . . . Where we will visit an Iberian settlement. Then we travel on to Peniscola . . . . Visiting the castle and discovering the history of the Knights Templar who occupied it.

At about 18:30 we will arrive at our 4* hotel in Peniscola where we will spend the two nights on a half board basis.

Day 2, Travel to Morella, arriving at 10:00.  We will have a tour of this charming town and visit the castle and monastery. We can then eat our picnic lunches or have a tapas lunch in the old town.

In the afternoon we will be visiting the Sanctuary of the Virgin de la Balma in Zorita del Maestrazgo. This Renaissance building is located in the rock and was built between 1500 and 1700. For long a place of pilgrimage it is also famous for a “health cure”, Llagrimes de la Balma, which has a  25% vol  rating.

We will then, time permitting, be visiting two craft activities. The first is one is where esparto grass is used to make of traditional rural shoes, espadrilles

We will then go to a traditional ecological cheese producer, where we will have a guided tour and a chance to sample (and buy) their cheese.

We will then return to the hotel for dinner.

Day 3. We will travel home via Tirig to visit the caves where there are some rare prehistoric cave paintings, as well as visiting the Valltorta museum to see copies of the paintings that will enable them to be put in context.

After a picnic lunch we will return to our departure points, arriving at about 17:30 in Oliva, 18:00 at Gata and 18:20 at Teulada.

Please be aware that times stated are “Valencian times”, apart from departure times on Day 1. We reserve the right to adjust our activities in the case of adverse weather.
