We meet each Thursday afternoon at 5.00pm and finish at 7.00pm. The cost is 2 euros per person which covers the hire of the room. We have an experienced teacher/caller who provides a good sound system and all the music.
What is "Square Dancing"
The "Square" is made from four couples who build a square and move with the music and dance "figures" which the caller tells them or sings to them.
During the Square Dance evening, dancers will dance about 120 small steps per minute - quite a fast rhythm - and dance 2-3 km. There are no dance moves like ballroom dancing, but the dance includes different small steps with quarters or half-turns. This does not hurt the knees or ankles. The dancers make different moves according to the calls and in this way create new formations within the Square.
The Caller's instructions have to be practiced and the dancers have to follow the caller very quickly. Therefore high concentration is needed which again is good for brain training. The music is Country with some 1960s songs, all generally very well known.
The Basic 1 Programme consists of 30 separate moves or sequences of moves. Basic 2 adds a further 21 sequences and finally, to achieve the recognition of a Square Dancer, a further 17 sequences are learned. The level of concentration required is high.
