Lecturer: Angela Chantry

Mata Hari (1876–1917) was known as Europe’s queen of unbridled eroticism, an exotic dancer, courtesan, harlot and great lover, who became a spy for France during World War I. Suspected of being a double agent, she was executed in 1917. Mystery continues to surround her life and alleged double agency, and her story has become a legend that still piques curiosity. It was said that she caused the deaths of tens of thousands of French soldiers, a crime that would ever after make her synonymous with seduction and treachery, the ultimate femme fatale.
