Subject: Eva Perón: her life, her legacy and the legend

Lecturer: Angela Chantry

Eva Perón (1919-1952) was a star and a legend during her lifetime, one of the most alluring women of the 20th century. The hit Broadway musical, Evita, by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, made her story famous and with the release of the film starring Madonna as Eva Perón in 1996, her life again became a media obsession. She has been described as a whore, a feminist, a tyrant and a saint – to millions of poor people she was a saviour but to her enemies she was a monstrous dictator. Evita rose from poverty to become the richest and most powerful woman in Argentina, but at the height of her power she died from cancer in 1952, at the age of 33. Whatever her critics may say, there was a fatal fascination about Eva Perón that remained even after death – an aura of passion that became a legend.
