Minutes of the Monthly Meeting held on

7 October 2019 at Salon G.L., Teulada

It is confirmed that the President and the Secretary attended the meeting as voted in at the AGM 4 March 2019.

David Haxon, the President, welcomed all members to the meeting, including the 25 new members. He confirmed the usual checks had been made, pointed out the emergency exits and asked for all mobile phones to be switched off through-out the meeting.

Prue Jackson read out the synopsis of the Minutes of the meeting on 2 September 2019. The full minutes had been posted on the website and these were proposed by Eileen Haxon, seconded by Ray Guise-Smith and approved by the members with a show of hands.

Presidents Address: David said the original Idea of an Autumn Fayre came from Eileen Haxon, with a lot of work going into making it a successful event, which was attended by 300 people. The event raised almost €1.800,00 with several donations from members who were unable to attend. Thanks went to all the volunteer stall holders and everyone who helped make the day a success. David then read out a letter from Sylvia Tatnell and the Committee of the A.F.A Teulada-Moraira, giving thanks for the donation and saying how impressed they were with the stalls and the Group’s work on display. David went on to say he had asked Sylvia to attend the November Monthly Meeting in order to present her with the funds received so far, for the Alzheimer’s Association.

Treasurer – Graham gave the opening balance for the U3A account as €14,335.62 and after income, expenditure and accruals the balance stands at €1,528.71. The Travel account opening balance stood at €18,059.94 and after income, expenditure and accruals the balance stands at €296.55. Both reports will be on the website.

Group Coordinator – Lynn said the new Groups, Yoga, Lunch Bunch and Gentle Walking are running but for Gentle Walking a Group Leader is required. A member of the Ladies Running Football is going to the trials for England. Further new Groups will not start until the New Year, 2020. The Dramarama Group are presenting their latest production “A Changing World” at the La Senieta, Moraira, on Tuesday 29 October at 7:00pm and on Wednesday 30 October at 6:00pm.

Travel – Lynn said the trip to Morella was a great success. An article has been written by Sharon Taylor which can be read on the website. There are a few trips for the following months – Guadalest, the Turron and Chocolate Factories, La Zenia, (although fully booked names can be added to the reserve list) and the away trip to Barcelona in December. Further information on these and 2020 trips can be found on the website. Lynn ended with thanks to those members that have put comments in the Suggestion Box, keep them coming.

Cultural Arts – As Beverly and Hugh Stewart were away, Prue read out their report which included – Live transmissions from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, starts again on 8 October with the Opera Don Giovanni. 24 October – Don Pasquale. 25 October – Concerts Costa Blanca presents “An Evening in New Orleans” with the Bourbon Street Stompers at the Auditori in Teulada. On the 30 October a Quiz at Inn-on-the-Green starting at 7:00 and is €12 per person including food. Further information on all events can be found on the website.

David then informed the members that the Committee/Membership Liaison officer, Dot Garrett had stepped down from the post and Prue Jackson would be standing in until a replacement is found. Anyone interested should contact Prue or David. Thanks was expressed by David, for all the time and effort Dot had put into this role, which had covered an assortment of subjects.

There was no other business although David reminded the members that tickets were on sale for the Christmas Dinner on 11 December. 

Eileen then introduced Andrew Johnson who would be speaking on “Lost in Translation – Divided by a Common Language”. After an interesting and amusing talk, the members gave Andrew a round of applause in appreciation. Eileen gave a gift to Andrew as thanks. The raffle was drawn, the winner was Janice Wilson, who received a voucher for JYSK in Moraira.
