Minutes Monthly Meeting 4th Feb 2019

University of the Third Age Moraira-Teulada
Minutes of the Monthly Meeting held on
4 February 2019 at Salon G.L., Teulada
at 10:30

It is confirmed that the President and the Secretary attended the meeting as voted in at the AGM 7 March 2018.

David Haxon, the President welcomed all members to the meeting, including the 29 new members. He confirmed the usual checks had been made, pointed out the emergency exits and asked for all mobile phones to be switched off through-out the meeting.

Travel – Read by Carol Mantle at this point, as she had to leave the meeting early. Carol said there was not a lot to report as all but two trips were full. On 27 March there is a trip to Ikea in Murcia, but this trip was almost full. If more people wanted to go the decision to take two buses may be needed. The cost per person is €10. An over-night trip to Italy from 6 to 31 March at a cost of, €2,050 per person based on 2018 prices. Full details of all the trips can be found on the Travel Page of the U3A website. The Committee have received queries concerning why the Accounts of the Travel Group are not reported on monthly, as with the reports from the U3A Treasurer. Carin Derksen, the treasurer, reports on all monies which are held on behalf of the Moraira-Teulada U3A members as a whole. The Travel Group are simply another Group amongst many and therefore only present balance sheets once a year, which are Audited and published before the AGM, in March, each year. The monies held by the Travel Group do in fact belong to those members signed up for trips and are held under the individual’s name on trust. Any surplus is used to run the Travel Group or as back up if there is a problem whilst on a trip. Therefore, this money does not belong to the membership and it cannot be reported on in the same way as the main Account.

Prue Jackson read out the synopsis of the Minutes of the Meeting on 7 January 2019. The full minutes had been posted on the website and these were proposed by Hugh Stewart, seconded by Sue Donadio and approved by the members with a show of hands.

President’s Address:
David welcomed everyone to the Meeting, adding that January had been a very busy month with three opportunities to renew the U3A Membership as well as joining for the first time. David thanked Pat Clarke the Membership Secretary and all the many helpers. Although mentioned many times, David again, thanked the Group Leaders for all the hard work. By way of appreciation the annual dinner for the Group Leaders will be held on Thursday 7 February which is expected to be another successful evening.

Next month is the AGM and any U3A member can apply for a Committee position. Nomination forms must be completed by the end of today’s meeting and handed to the Secretary. David urged everyone to give serious consideration to becoming a Committee Member, as the present Committee could not be expected to fulfil the positions indefinitely, before thanking all for their support throughout the year.

Group Coordinator – Lynn said Sue Popkin was now her administration assistant. It is hoped that for the next Monthly Meeting, a rolling screen will show members all the Groups available to join. A suggestion of creating a Crime watch Group had been received, but the Committee felt the local Neighbourhood Watch Scheme could be adopted in areas that were not yet included in the scheme.
