Minutes of the Monthly Meeting held on

5th November 2018 at Salon G.L., Teulada

at 10:30′

It is confirmed that the President and the Secretary attended the meeting as voted in at the AGM on 7th March 2018.

David Haxon, the President, welcomed everybody to the Meeting especially the 8 new members. He confirmed the usual Security checks had been made, advised the position of the emergency exits and asked for all mobiles to be switched off.

Prue Jackson read out the synopsis of the Minutes of the Meeting on 1st October 2018. The full minutes had been posted on the website and these were proposed by Hugh Stewart, seconded by Sue Donadio and approved by the members.

President’s Address

David mentioned that Poppies were available at the meeting, as Remembrance Day was fast approaching. David and Eileen had watched The Invictus games with nothing but admiration for the participants’ perseverance to overcome their terrible injuries. A thank you to all the members who help support this year’s Charity ‘Make a Smile’. He gave a reminder of the Christmas Bag appeal for gifts, collected at the December Meeting, to be delivered to the Charity. The Mosaic Group and Knit and Natter Group were displaying some of the items produced by their members as well as the Creative Writing Group with their first book on sale. The overall winners of the Pairs Annual Bowls competition, were Len Salter and Sylvia Harding.

Reports

Treasurer – Carin read out her report, which will be on the website. As at 1st October we held €9.348,20 and after income of 3.170,00 and expense of €1.392,75, as at 5th November we hold €11.125,00. However, the Christmas Dinner Dance will be paid for in December which will reduce the amount held, considerably. 

Travel – Carol mentioned a few Trips but the full details were on the website. The Benidorm Palace trip was now full and the trip to Ikea on 9th January only had 13 places left.  The overnight trip to Cartagena on 16th to 18th April 2019, this is the 4th time this trip has taken place, due to popular demand. There are limited places on this trip so early booking is advised. The cost is €135 per person which includes the Hotel half board. In 2019 there is a trip to Italy for 26 days/25 nights at an approximate cost of €2050 based on 2018 prices.

Group Coordinator – Lynn hoped that many of the members had seen the displays by the Mosaic and Knit and Natter Groups, as well as the book produced by the Creative Writing Group with all proceeds going to ‘Make a Smile Charity’. Items purchased, from the Knit and Natter display, the cash received will go to various Charities, such as Alzheimer’s, prem baby unit at Denia Hospital and an orphanage. A new Group launched yesterday – Beach Petrol – involved 12 people meeting at Moraira beach with rubbish bags, rubbish grabbers and protective gloves with the determination to rid the beach of non-bio degradable rubbish. The morning ended with coffee and other refreshments. It is intended to launch this Group to the U3A with effect from January 2019. The Dramarama Group have been rehearsing for the U3A Christmas Panto for the local School. The U3A presentation is on Tuesday 27th November. The Petanque Group 4 and 5 require a new Group Leader due to the retirement of the present Leader. Anyone interested, please contact Lynn.

Membership/Committee Liaison – Dot advised the members that the renewal dates for membership, 2019 were now on the website. Rona Hurst, the Support Group Coordinator, is asking for volunteers to cover essential needs of a member who might require some temporary help. Also Peter Griffiths on behalf of MABS needs drivers, expenses will be paid. Please contact either Rona through our website or Peter Griffiths for MABS. Dot went on to say this year’s Charity ‘Make a Smile’, the collection box is still at the door of the Monthly Meetings. The Creative Writing Groups’ book on sale today with proceeds going to the Charity. Donations please, of unwanted costume jewellery for the children’s home as the children use it for craft projects. The request that members could pay their membership fees on line, was discussed by the Committee, but it was voted that this would not be approved.

Cultural Arts Events – Hugh gave details of some events taking place during November and December. Full details of all events can be found on the Website. Live transmissions from the Royal Opera House London, continues directly from Covent Garden to Calpe Casa de la Cultura, Cine Roma, Alfaz del Pi and Condado theatre in Denia. 13th November – Ballet La Bayadére (Petipa) and 3rd December – Ballet The Nutcracker (Wright). 30th January – Opera La Traviata (Verdi)  November 15th  – Caprice’s Autumn concert “Wonderful Tonight” at San Josep, La Fustera, 26th until 1st December Javea Players presents “Rough Justice”. 9th December the Teulada-Moraira Lions presents their annual Christmas show “What Cracker VI” in Espai la Senieta, Moraira. 1st December the Chaplaincy Singers present their seasonal concert A Festive Noel at the Ermita San Josep, La Fustera, starting at 6:00pm followed by mince pies and mulled wine.

Matters Arising from the Reports – There were no matters arising from the Reports.

Any Other Business – No other business to discuss.

Eileen said the speakers on the ‘N332’ were unable to attend, but luckily Sylvia Tattnell stepped in at short notice and gave a talk on “Alzheimer’s”. After a very interesting and informative talk, a few questions from the Members were answered by Sylvia. A round of applause from the members as a thank you. Eileen announced that the Charity supported by U3A Moraira-Teulada in 2019 will be the Alzheimer’s, this was well received by all. The raffle was drawn, the winning ticket 330 was held by Ed Morley who received a voucher for €50 from ‘Summer house’, Moraira.
