14th to 18th September 2015
– 5 days, 4 nights –
Leader: Carol Mantle & Anne Cattle
We will be visiting Peniscola during the Moors and Christians Fiesta so there will be plenty to do in the evenings watching parades and firework displays and general soaking up the atmosphere.
During the first day you will have an opportunity of discovering the old town of Peniscola with its beautiful old castle and little winding streets. We will be staying in a 4 star hotel on a half board basis and drinks included at meal times.
On the second day you will have the opportunity of going on a trip to Morella which is a picturesque Gothic City. The highlights are, first of all, the castle and medieval walls, erected in the 14th century. Within the old enclosure, there are notable churches, like the Santa María la Mayor Archpriest (1263-1330), Gothic with Baroque details; the old San Francisco Convent (13th century); the San Juan Churches (15th century), Gothic with Neoclassical decorations, and the San Nicolás Church, Gothic; and the San Marcos and San Pedro Mártir Chapels.
On the third day there will be a day trip to Zaragoza which has 2,000 years of history. You will find a stunning legacy of monuments in the streets of the city, vestiges of the Roman, Moorish, Jewish and Christian communities who left their mark on the place: Roman ruins such as the Circus; Aljafería Palace; Mudejar-style churches, with the UNESCO World Heritage designation; Baroque gems like the Pilar Basilica; the work of brilliant artist Francisco de Goya…
On the fourth day there will be a trip to Tarragona which is a city full of surprises with thousands of years of civilization just waiting to be explored. Visit the vaults of the Roman circus, lose yourself in the charming alleys of the historic quarter. Discover the true World Heritage of Tarragona, a heritage of historic monuments and locations from Roman, medieval and modern eras
