Subject: The Life and Work of Ansel Adams, Landscape Photographer

Lecturer: Peter Atkinson

Ansel Adams (1902-1984), who worked mainly in the ‘High Sierra’ of the western United States, is arguably history’s most famous landscape photographer.  His joint passions for photography and wilderness began at the age of 12 on a family holiday in Yosemite where he was given a Box Brownie.  In the late-19th and early-20th centuries photography was dominated by ‘Pictorialism’, work that mimicked painting.  Adams was an advocate of “pure or straight photography” that was not “derivative of any other art form”.  In this lecture, we shall look at his work, not only as a photographer but also as a writer and teacher, and as a pioneer conservationist where he used his reputation and high profile to become an influential figure in Washington.
