Anna Mary Robertson Moses, known by her nickname Grandma Moses, was a renowned American folk artist who started painting in her 70s. Her nostalgic depictions of rural American life became internationally recognised and her paintings are among the collections of many museums. She has appeared on magazine covers, television and in a documentary on her life, won numerous awards and was awarded two honorary doctoral degrees. In person, Grandma Moses charmed wherever she went. A tiny, lively woman with mischievous grey eyes and a quick wit, she could be sharp-tongued with a sycophant and stern with an errant grandchild. Grandma Moses worked from memory, portraying a way of life she knew from experience. In her paintings there is no despair, unhappiness, or aging, yet this unrealistic view of life is presented with remarkable power.
