On 23 February 1981 a group of armed civil guards led by Antonio Tejero entered the Congress of Deputies to seize control of the government. Franco had died in 1975. What had happened since then to provoke a coup? What were the plotters aims? Why did the coup fail? What would have happened if it had succeeded – would we be sitting here? Why did the current government release more papers last month and what do they tell us? And why did they wear those funny hats?
