A single provocative act of terrorism in June 1914 was to plunge Europe into an immediate vortex of brutality, the effect of which was to result in two world wars.

Artists who had hitherto ,  portrayed war , as a remote,  glorious, and even romantic, happening now began to face up to the stark reality.

Many, reluctantly, turned away from civilian pursuits and joined the armed forces. They were to see the effects of modern warfare at close quarters.
