Subject: Elizabeth Thompson (1846- 1933)

Lecturer: Angela Chantry

During her heyday in the 1870s, Elizabeth Thompson was one of the most acclaimed artists in Britain. She showed a strong aptitude at a young age for painting horses and soldiers, and was one of the first female artists to achieve fame in painting military and historical subject matter. She was admired by critics such as John Ruskin, who said she had forced him to admit he had been wrong in believing that “no woman could paint”.
