Mike’s talk will examine this issue from an 18th c. British, viewpoint and how the call for abolition started. He will use the language of that time and discuss how the vested interests, who were totally opposed to change, were defeated by public opinion which “forced Members of Parliament to act like turkeys voting for Christmas” Slavery underpinned much of the Industrial Revolution and little thought was given to the horrors of transportation. You will be invited to consider the extent to which slavery still exists today.
