The historic quarter of Elche is capital of the region of Bajo Vinalopo in Alicante. Elche is the only place in the world where the tradition of crafting white palm fronds lives on. Palm branches are plaited into beautiful, creative forms and figures.

Palm Sunday is the final Sunday of Lent. Easter week then gets under way in Elche with the White Palm Procession, declared a Festival of international Tourist interest in 1997.

The main event of the day is the Palm procession, which starts at 11.00 am and is particularly striking for the 100s of Blanche White Palm leaves from the city’s palm groves carried through the streets by the faithful.

Easter week in Elche is the display of these white Palm arrangements, all competing to be the most creative in terms of size, height, decorative touches, attention to detail, complexity and artistic flair.

They are made by local craftspeople throughout the year and are famous all over the world.

The Parade starts firstly with the palms being blessed in Paseo de la Estacion, from there people taking part in the procession will make their way to Diagnol Del Palau, pass over the bridge of Puente de Altamina to their destination the Basilica of Sainta Marie.

Once the Parade is over you will have time to wander through the communal gardens of the Palm groves in the centre of Elche

The museums and monuments are open on Sunday from 10-14.00 hrs, and entrance is free.
