River cruise – Duro Queen.

Thu 15 April, 2027 @ 08:00 Fri 23 April, 2027 @ 17:00

U3A Trip Leaders: Carole and Paul Clark

This is a fantastic river cruise for our discerning members which we know will have something special for everyone.
I am delighted to be able to offer you through the Cruise Market a stunning holiday on the Douro Queen, sailing from Porto and back to Porto over an exciting week of discovery, departing on 15 April 2027.

After flying from Alicante to Porto we set sail on a journey that feels less like a holiday and more like stepping into a living postcard. From the moment you board the Douro Queen in Porto, the pace shifts to something richer and more immersive. The river carries you through a landscape sculpted by centuries of winemaking, where terraced vineyards climb steep hills and golden light reflects off the water as you glide past quiet villages and historic estates. Days are filled with discovery, whether wandering through the atmospheric streets of Porto, tasting world-famous port in traditional cellars, or standing in awe of grand palaces and ancient castles that tell the story of Portugal’s past.

Each stop adds a new layer of experience. In Pinhão, azulejo-tiled stations and vineyard lunches bring local culture to life. In Régua and beyond, the scenery becomes even more dramatic, with the river cutting deep through the valley. There is the chance to cross into Spain and explore Salamanca’s glowing sandstone architecture, or to climb through the historic lanes of Castelo Rodrigo, where different cultures once lived side by side. Back on board, the experience never slows down, with panoramic views from the sun deck, refreshing dips in the pool, and evenings of fine dining paired with regional wines, culture, scenery, and atmosphere that blends relaxation with genuine exploration.

The Douro Queen

The Douro Queen guarantees the best views. Relax on the sun deck and enjoy the magnificent landscape of the Portuguese Douro Valley with its wine terraces. The pool on deck invites you to take a refreshing dip in between. We also place great emphasis on comfort on board. The stylishly furnished cabins on the upper deck have a private balcony with seating. In the cozy restaurant, you can enjoy excellent local and international cuisine as well as the fine wines of this world-famous wine region.

PORTO

Day 1 we fly from Alicante to Porto and join our river boat in the late afternoon.

On Day 2 we shall have an excursion to the “Cradle of the Nation of Portugal” Guimarães …… a City tour/drive through Porto with a tasting in a wine cellar

On Day 3 One of the highlights – an excursion to Pinhão, including lunch at a traditional quinta – is also included in the tour price.
Colourful towns, picturesque villages and spectacular landscapes create a varied journey through sunny Portugal.
Also on day 3 Excursion to the Mateus Palace in Vila Real
is included, with its park-like garden. Between the 15th and 17th centuries, numerous members of the nobility settled in Vila Real. The main attraction of the town is Mateus Palace, the mansion of the last count of Vila Real. The baroque building is located in a landscaped park with carefully trimmed hedges and ancient trees. The gardens are among the most beautiful in Europe, and a guided tour of the palace is included.

Day 4 Excursion to Castelo Rodrigo is included, with its historic castle ruins.
Castelo Rodrigo is one of the 12 historic parishes of Portugal, situated about 670 meters above sea level. For centuries, Jews, Arabs and Christians lived here together. Known as the “white town” because of its almond trees, it features castle and palace ruins, cobbled streets, and 16th century facades with distinctive Manueline-style window details.

Day 5 a possible trip to the Spanish university city of Salamanca. (Book this trip at an extra cost 89 euros pp)

All buildings in the City Centre are built from golden stone, giving Salamanca its unique appearance. The tour includes the oldest university in Spain, the Plaza Mayor, once used for bullfights, and the Casa de las Conchas. You will also visit the 16th century Gothic New Cathedral and the 12th century Old Cathedral. Lunch is included.

Day 6 Excursion to the pilgrimage town of Lamego.
Lamego developed during the Portuguese Baroque period. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies overlooks the town, and visitors can walk down around 600 steps to reach the centre. Highlights include the Gothic cathedral and a museum with an impressive art collection. Lamego is also known for its local specialties, including smoked ham, Bola de Lamego, roast kid, and the sparkling wine Raposeira.
