The film is based on Tom Michell’s memoir about his own experience.
A disillusioned Englishman goes to work in a school in a divided Argentina. During the 1976 coup he travels to Uruguay, where he rescues a Magellanic penguin drenched in oil from a beach and brings it back to his school. His life begins to change when the bird’s presence starts to have an unexpectedly positive effect on the school.
