Two of them didn’t start painting until their 40s\, one not until her late 70s. DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Angela Chantry \n\n\n\nIn the early 16th century Hernán Cortés and his conquistadors defeated the great Aztec Empire\, built a new city for colonists from Spain and took control of vast lands stretching from today’s south-western U.S. down through most of Central America. A story not often told\, however\, is that one of the reasons for the success of this conquest was the invaluable help of a woman\, Princess Malinalli\, known today as La Malinche. Born around 1500 to nobleparents\, after the death of her father and re-marriage of her mother\, she was sold into slavery to Mayan traders who in turn sold her to the Spanish invaders. Her facility with languages brought her to the attention of Cortés\, who used her as a translator and confidante. She was known to the Spanish as Doña Marina and was the mother of Cortés’ first son\, Martin. La Malinche is often described as the embodiment of a new culture\, one in which the mixing of races\, Spanish and Aztec\, created a new world. This view is not shared by all Mexicans\, however. DESCRIPTION:Because we are increasingly finding it more difficult to find good speakers willing to spend hours researching their subject and then presenting it to our members we must\, very occasionally\, repeat and old talk. This time it is one which was presented eight years ago – although it is considerable modified from the original. \n\n\n\nSo\, this talk is The History of the Automobile and it is entirely non-technical so it will\, hopefully\, interest everyone. \n\n\n\nIt will cover from the oldest car which is still in full running order today\, to the proposed designs of the future. It will also include some of the strangest vehicles ever produced to those popular vehicles from the 50’s and 60’s which will hold so many happy memories for many of our members.

DESCRIPTION:Lecturer: John Hopwood \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrank Winfield Woolworth was the son of a farmer recently returned from the American Civil War and in 1879 at the age of twenty-one he founded the 5 & 10 cents stores which\, according to the Guinness Book of Records\, became the largest retail business and department store chain in the world with more than 4000 almost identical stores located in many countries. \n\n\n\nWith the profits he made he built the Woolworth Building in 1912\, the tallest “skyscraper” in the world for more than eighteen years and still the 28th tallest in New York\, and he paid for the entire cost of the construction – in cash! \n\n\n\nIt is also the story of members of the Woolworth family who inherited enormous wealth and their amazing lifestyles and profligate spending. \n\n\n\nYou would have to win the biggest ever Euromillions lottery prize (€190 million) at least ten times to compare with what they had. \n\n\n\nThey did not spend it wisely! \n\n\n\nSo\, a mixture of great enterprise and endeavour followed by sex\, drugs and the most extraordinary spending on lavish houses\, amazing jewellery\, fast cars and some very poor choices of husbands! \n\n\n\nJohn will illustrate his talk with many extraordinary photographs from the past.

One of the first nabobs\, (a Muslim official or governor under the Mogul empire) Yale bequeathed his name to one of the world’s most famous universities. At the same time\, he left nothing to poor Catherine except the slur of branding her a “wicked wife.” But Catherine’s own background is fascinating – daughter to one of the Levant Company’s merchant adventurers who helped introduce Alicante wines to the world. Her husband’s reputation is tarnished\, however\, by his involvement\, through the East India Company\, in the Indian slave trade but the true story of Catherine and Elihu Yale is still “stranger than fiction” – as author of the Yale Trilogy\, David Ebsworth\, explains in this one-hour session.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Peter Atkinson \n\n\n\nWe are absolutely delighted to welcome back one of our favourite speakers\, Peter Atkinson\, who is returning to this area for a short time from his new life in Canada and has kindly fitted in one of his superb talks for our members whilst here. \n\n\n\nHis presentation will explore the work and lives of these three men. Each was a brilliant and prolific artist in his field and\, remarkably\, they were all born in the city during a five-year period in the 1860s: painter\, Joaquín Sorolla y Bastide (1863-1923); sculptor\, Mariano Benlliure y Gil (1862-1947); and writer\, Vicente Blasco Ibáñez (1867-1928). They knew each other and\, without being particularly close\, they were friends. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlmost all of Joaquín’s work is oil on canvas and was mostly done outdoors under the Mediterranean sun; he is known as a “painter of light”. He painted people at work and play\, did a lot of landscapes and garden scenes\, and accepted many commissions for portraits. His family (wife and three children) were often his subjects. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMariano had intended to be a painter but\, on a visit to Rome\, the work of Michelangelo inspired him to become a sculptor. While most of his work is bronze\, he was also a gifted chiseller of marble. He produced many busts and close to one hundred monumental works\, often large and complex and mostly in Spain (Valencia and Madrid in particular). \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVicente had the most varied life of the three. With 50 titles\, he was principally a novelist\, the early ones being set around the Albufera lake to the south of Valencia. He also wrote 15 non-fiction books and was a journalist; he founded a newspaper for which he wrote almost a thousand articles. And he was a left-wing\, republican politician: anti-monarchy\, anti-Church\, and anti-landowner. He spent a decade in the Cortes\, the national parliament\, and had three stints in jail. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nI hope that as many members as possible will join us to enjoy this excellent speaker.

All the heavenly bodies appeared to revolve around the Earth. Pythagoras and other Greek philosophers working in Alexandria in Egypt during the first millennium BC disproved the flat Earth theory and within a short period of time had discovered the size of the Earth and Moon and the distances between them. The influence of Aristotle and Ptolemy and the teachings of the Church stalled any further progress and it wasnot until the seventeenth century that Kepler and Galileo could show beyond doubt that the planets went round the Sun using the earliest telescopes as aids.We will also discover that in the 18 th Century\, Nevil Maskelyne found a way of ‘weighing’ the Earth by taking a very large plumb line on a series of rambles in the Scottish Highlands.

Even if we didn’t live through those years\, it’s fun to hark back to those wild times. All good things come to an end\, though\, & that decade finished with the start of the Great Depression. As this is too . . . well\, depressing to spend much time on\, we won’t focus on the worst of it. Instead\, we’ll quickly go onto the programs in the US that helped many people get through the hardest of those dreadful times. From the general programs\, we’ll look specifically at those that helped the creative community.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Prepare to be surprised to hear about some artists who later became very famous & wealthy\, but who were glad to receive a paycheck of $23.60 per week during the bad years!

We will see that a significant number of scientific discoveries throughout history have been made by mistake; such that the intended result failed but the unintended consequence was so dramatic and useful to society that the researcher was then awarded a Nobel prize. \n\n\n\nA well-known example is that of the work of Alexander Fleming who had the foresight to realise that the mouldy formation that appeared in a petri dish that he had forgotten to clean could be useful. At the time he was not studying antibiotics but he understood there was potential and penicillin has since saved millions of lives. \n\n\n\nIn this talk we will look at ten different Eureka moments in history and we can ask the question\, do the people who made such discoveries deserve the recognition and reward given that they stumbled upon the outcomes?

DESCRIPTION:Due to a cancellation\, I have decided to repeat this talk\, which I previously gave approximately six years ago\, about my favourite artist\, the lad from Bradford\, David Hockney. \n\n\n\nIt is a remarkable story concerning a man from a very normal background who progresses through life to become one of the best-known artists in the world\, is voted as the most influential British artist of all time by 1\,000 of his fellow artists and who’s art sells for hundreds of millions of pounds. \n\n\n\nInitially his art appears to be quite simple but it is soon seen to be full of detail and each work tells a story. \n\n\n\nDavid is also famous for designing wonderful sets and scenery for major operas around the world. \n\n\n\nHe has recently moved to live in Normandy\, France and his art work there featuring much of the countryside near his home is a delight.

In a Europe torn by strife and revolution\, she nevertheless managed to thrive as an independent\, self-supporting artist\, doggedly setting up studios in Rome\, Naples\, Venice\, Milan\, Vienna\, St. Petersburg\, and London. \n\n\n\nElisabeth Vigée Le Brun was a singularly gifted and high-spirited woman during the revolutionary era\, connected with such personalities of her age as Catherine the Great\, Napoleon\, and Benjamin Franklin. Long overlooked\, Vigée Le Brun’s portraits now hang in the Louvre\, as well as in all leading art museums of the world.

SUMMARY:Joy Adamson (1910-1980): naturalist\, artist and author.
DESCRIPTION:Friederike Victoria “Joy” Adamson was a passionate\, temperamental and controversial woman. Although she married three times and was an infamous seducer\, she never experienced happiness with any of her husbands or lovers. She won international renown with her African wildlife books\, especially the trilogy describing how\, together with her last husband\, George Adamson\, she raised a lion cub\, Elsa\, and returned it to its natural habitat. All three were best sellers that were later developed into films and condensed into one volume as The Story of Elsa (1966). \n\n\n\nDuring her lifetime\, she created more than 500 paintings and line drawings. Her work included portraits of the indigenous populations commissioned by the government of Kenya\, as well as botanical illustrations for at least seven books on East African flora. She also produced animal paintings\, among them studies of Elsa and Pippa. \n\n\n\nJoy Adamson pioneered the movement to preserve African wildlife but was murdered by a disgruntled employee in 1980. Her husband\, George Adamson was killed by animal poachers in 1989. In 2004\, however\, in an extraordinary prison cell interview\, his first since he was jailed for Adamson’s killing\, Paul Nakware Ekai claimed that Joy Adamson was a ‘very hot-tempered’ boss\, and that he killed her after she shot him for complaining about not being paid. An article in The Guardian\, February 2004\, raised the question: Was Joy Adamson an angel of mercy… or a tyrant?

Cugnot’s vehicle was a huge\, heavy\, steam-powered tricycle\, and his model of 1769 was said to have run for 20 minutes at 2.25 miles (3.6 km) per hour while carrying four people.
