SUMMARY:Last breath
DESCRIPTION:5:30pm doors open\, for 6:00pm start (ends 7:30pm) \n\n\n\nU3A Membership Card for entrance (free) – NO booking required \n\n\n\nChris Lemons\, Duncan Allcock\, and David Yuasa are members of a team of saturation divers who work to maintain undersea gas lines in the North Sea. While on rotation\, the divers live onboard a vessel in pressurized chambers which maintain conditions required for diving and working at 300 feet (90 m)below sea level. During a deployment\, Lemons and Yuasa exit the bell to begin work on an undersea gas line manifold\, while Allcock remains stationed in the bell to monitor their status and attend to the umbilical lines that supply them with communications\, hot water and breathing gas. But on the surfacein heavy seas\, their vessel’s Dynamic Positioning System (DPS) experiences a malfunction\, causing the ship to begin drifting away from the work site. This heart-pounding film starring Woody Harrelson is based on the true story of the seasoned deep sea divers who battled the raging elements to rescue their crewmate trapped hundreds of feet below the ocean’s surface. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n.

SUMMARY:The Amazing History of Woolworths and the Astounding Lives of Members of the Woolworth Family
DESCRIPTION:Lecturer: John Hopwood \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrank Winfield Woolworth was the son of a farmer recently returned from the American Civil War and in 1879 at the age of twenty-one he founded the 5 & 10 cents stores which\, according to the Guinness Book of Records\, became the largest retail business and department store chain in the world with more than 4000 almost identical stores located in many countries. \n\n\n\nWith the profits he made he built the Woolworth Building in 1912\, the tallest “skyscraper” in the world for more than eighteen years and still the 28th tallest in New York\, and he paid for the entire cost of the construction – in cash! \n\n\n\nIt is also the story of members of the Woolworth family who inherited enormous wealth and their amazing lifestyles and profligate spending. \n\n\n\nYou would have to win the biggest ever Euromillions lottery prize (€190 million) at least ten times to compare with what they had. \n\n\n\nThey did not spend it wisely! \n\n\n\nSo\, a mixture of great enterprise and endeavour followed by sex\, drugs and the most extraordinary spending on lavish houses\, amazing jewellery\, fast cars and some very poor choices of husbands! \n\n\n\nJohn will illustrate his talk with many extraordinary photographs from the past.

Take the Calle de San Lorenzo road pass the picnic and playground area on the left. The road starts to climb and narrow as the surroundings become more rural.\n\n\n\nThe tarmac road bends sharply to the left but you should keep to the right and after approximately 300 meters the tarmac road ends. At this point you will see a house on your right and a pigeon/chicken farm on your left. Go straight ahead\, take the narrow track adjacent to the farm fence and walk towards the open countryside.\n\n\n\nContinue on the single track passing a ruined finca on your left and another on the right. Turn left here along the road and just before you reach the wooded area (there is a pylon on the left)\, turn left up a wide track that then bends right uphill. This track meets a wide track at right angles – go straight across.\n\n\n\nThe track narrows\, quite steeply uphill. Continue up the hill until you reach a path on the right. Take this sharp right turn downhill until it reaches a wide track where you turn left.\n\n\n\nYou are now on Carrer del Lago Superior\, a wide stony track through the woods. Continue on this path for about ¾ km during which you will pass a derelict villa on the right opposite a clearing and a second clearing on the left.\n\n\n\nStay on the track until you reach a crossroads and a red fire hydrant\, turn right and go down the slight hill. As you clear the wooded area ignore initial tracks to the left and right and take the track with a meter high stone wall on its left.\n\n\n\nFollow this track towards a house\, as the track reaches the house then it turns sharp right and goes downhill. After a short distance take the second single path on the left into a wooded area and continue walking along this track until you reach a small number of houses. At this point the track becomes a tarmac road.\n\n\n\nContinue down on this road (Calle del mar Arabigo) and at the bottom of the hill stay on the tarmac road as it bends to the right and heads towards a large house on the left. Turn left at the house and remain on the tarmac road.\n\n\n\nWalk down the road until you reach the track you walked earlier\, and turning right along it re trace your route back to the start

Then\, we will pass along the shore of the Golden Horn and visit the Iron Church of St. Stephen\, a Bulgarian Orthodox church in a Turkish city\, associated with the struggle for ecclesiastical independence in the 1830s and 1840s. It is the only iron Orthodox church in the world. Next\,we will visit the Grand Bazaar\, which has over 4\,500 shops specializing in different products such as jewelry and clothing. After lunch\, we will visit the Basilica of Hagia Sophia\, “DivineWisdom\,” undoubtedly one of the most fantastic buildings of all time. During the Ottoman Empire\, it was converted into a mosque\, and minarets were added over time. We will then visit the ancient Hippodrome from the Byzantine era\, which was the center of civil activity in the country. Today\, it preserves the Obelisk of Theodosius\, the Serpentine Column\, and the Fountain of Emperor Wilhelm. Finally\, we will visit the Blue Mosque\, built in 1609 during thereign of Sultan Ahmed\, who wanted to surpass the Hagia Sophia. These walls were built by Emperor Theodosius II in 413. The walls were only breached twice—by the Crusaders in 1204 and by Mehmet the Conqueror in 1453. Next\, we will visit the Monastery of the Virgin of the Spring. According to historians Procopius and Cedrenus\, the church was originally built by Emperor Justinian in the final years of his reign near a spring once known as the “Miraculous Spring.” After lunch\, we will transfer to the port to embark on a Bosphorus Cruise\, the strait that separates two continents and connects the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara. Of Arab origin\, it was rebuilt by Don Juan Manuel in the 14th century. \n\n\n\nThe old town\, which has been declared a Historic-Artistic Site\, is made up of narrow streets that surround the castle. Inside it\, the palace of the Counts of Cirat stands out\, also known as the Casa Grande\, with a beautiful Mannerist doorway. Civil architecture is also represented by 17th-century manor houses\, such as that of the Enríquez de Navarra or the Marquises of Montortal; the old granary\, now the House of Culture; and the Town Hall. As for religious buildings\, of interest are the parish church of the Assumption\, from the 16th-19th centuries; the convent of the Augustinians\, with a baroque façade; that of San Francisco and the hermitage of San Blas. \n\n\n\nSerrin Carpets. Made of Sawdust. We visit the museum and then have free time for lunch before returning to the hotel. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlbacete. We visit the city in the morning and have free time before having lunch which is included but not drinks. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter lunch we visit Lietor.
