SUMMARY:The Amazing History of Woolworths and the Astounding Lives of Members of the Woolworth Family
DESCRIPTION:Lecturer: John Hopwood \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrank Winfield Woolworth was the son of a farmer recently returned from the American Civil War and in 1879 at the age of twenty-one he founded the 5 & 10 cents stores which\, according to the Guinness Book of Records\, became the largest retail business and department store chain in the world with more than 4000 almost identical stores located in many countries. \n\n\n\nWith the profits he made he built the Woolworth Building in 1912\, the tallest “skyscraper” in the world for more than eighteen years and still the 28th tallest in New York\, and he paid for the entire cost of the construction – in cash! \n\n\n\nIt is also the story of members of the Woolworth family who inherited enormous wealth and their amazing lifestyles and profligate spending. \n\n\n\nYou would have to win the biggest ever Euromillions lottery prize (€190 million) at least ten times to compare with what they had. \n\n\n\nThey did not spend it wisely! \n\n\n\nSo\, a mixture of great enterprise and endeavour followed by sex\, drugs and the most extraordinary spending on lavish houses\, amazing jewellery\, fast cars and some very poor choices of husbands! \n\n\n\nJohn will illustrate his talk with many extraordinary photographs from the past.

SUMMARY:Last breath
DESCRIPTION:5:30pm doors open\, for 6:00pm start (ends 7:30pm) \n\n\n\nU3A Membership Card for entrance (free) – NO booking required \n\n\n\nChris Lemons\, Duncan Allcock\, and David Yuasa are members of a team of saturation divers who work to maintain undersea gas lines in the North Sea. While on rotation\, the divers live onboard a vessel in pressurized chambers which maintain conditions required for diving and working at 300 feet (90 m)below sea level. During a deployment\, Lemons and Yuasa exit the bell to begin work on an undersea gas line manifold\, while Allcock remains stationed in the bell to monitor their status and attend to the umbilical lines that supply them with communications\, hot water and breathing gas. But on the surfacein heavy seas\, their vessel’s Dynamic Positioning System (DPS) experiences a malfunction\, causing the ship to begin drifting away from the work site. This heart-pounding film starring Woody Harrelson is based on the true story of the seasoned deep sea divers who battled the raging elements to rescue their crewmate trapped hundreds of feet below the ocean’s surface. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n.

SUMMARY:Hannibal: Rome's Greatest Enemy - now starts at 12 noon
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Angela Chantry \n\n\n\nOver two thousand years ago one of the greatest military leaders in history almost destroyed Rome.Hannibal\, a daring African general from the city of Carthage\, led an army of warriors and battle elephants over the snowy Alps to invade the very heart of Rome’s growing empire. But what kind of person would dare to face the most relentless imperial power of the ancient world? How could Hannibal\, consistently outnumbered and always deep in enemy territory\, win battle after battle until he held the very fate of Rome within his grasp?Hannibal appeals to many as the ultimate underdog—a Carthaginian David against the Goliath of Rome—but it wasn’t just his genius on the battlefield that set him apart. As a boy and then a man\, his self-discipline and determination were legendary. As a military leader\, like Alexander the Great before him and Julius Caesar after\, he understood the hearts of men and had an uncanny ability to read the unseen weaknesses of his enemy. But Hannibal was much more than just a great general. He was a practiced statesman\, a skilled diplomat\, and a man deeply devoted to his family and country.

SUMMARY:Inside Man
DESCRIPTION:5:30pm doors open\, for 6:00pm start (ends 8:05pm) \n\n\n\nU3A Membership Card for entrance (free) – NO booking required \n\n\n\nComposed and meticulous\, the soft-spoken and ingenious bank robber\, Dalton Russell\, has orchestrated the perfect heist — shortly\, the Manhattan bank at 20 Exchange Place along with dozens of hostages will be his to command. Try as he might\, the rough hostage negotiator\, Keith Frazier (Denzel Washington)\, is always one step behind the criminal mastermind — and what is more disheartening — the institution’s silver-haired founder\, Arthur Case (Christopher Plummer)\, recruits the shrewd and experienced problem-fixer\, Madeline White (Jodie Foster)\, to retrieve something of paramount importance. What’s more\, to Frazier’s intense frustration\, the thieves seem to be in no great hurry to resolve the situation. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Ally O Brian \n\n\n\nWhat are the stories behind some of the famous products?  Birds Custard and Royal Baking Powder were both invented because Alfred Bird’s wife was allergic to yeast and eggs.  “Marriage is a lot more harmonious when one’s wife can satisfy her sweet tooth”!!!  \n\n\n\nWhy is there no sugar or flavouring in cornflakes?  What was plasticine first used for?  How did lingerie go from a silk camisole to a push-up bra? \n\n\n\nKellogg’s cornflakes\, Liquorice Allsorts\, Goddard’s Wonderbra\, Plasticine\, Sunlight soap\, Gillette and more.  They all have a history.

SUMMARY:Salmon Fishing in the Yemen
DESCRIPTION:5:30pm doors open\, for 6:00pm start (ends 7:45pm) \n\n\n\nU3A Membership Card for entrance (free) – NO booking required \n\n\n\nVisionary Sheikh Muhammed bin Zaida bani Tihama (Amr Waked) believes his passion for the peaceful pastime of salmon fishing can enrich the lives of his people\, and he dreams of bringing the sport to the not so fish-friendly desert. Willing to spare no expense\, he instructs his representative to turn the dream into reality\, an extraordinary feat that will require the involvement of Britain’s leading fisheries expert\, Dr. Alfred “Fred” Jones (Ewan McGregor)\, who happens to think the project both absurd and unachievable. That is\, until the Prime Minister’s overzealous press secretary\, Patricia Maxwell (Dame Kristin Scott Thomas) latches on to it as a “goodwill” story. Now\, this unlikely team will put it all on the line and embark on an upstream journey of faith and fish to prove the impossible\, possible. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n.
