SUMMARY:The attempted Spanish Coup of 1981
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Mike Granville \n\n\n\nOn 23 February 1981 a group of armed civil guards led by Antonio Tejero entered the Congress of Deputies to seize control of the government.  Franco had died in 1975.  What had happened since then to provoke a coup?  What were the plotters aims?  Why did the coup fail?  What would have happened if it had succeeded – would we be sitting here?   Why did the current government release more papers last month and what do they tell us?   And why did they wear those funny hats? \n\n\n\nInterested ? Do NOT take the next turning on the left (Lago Como) but continue straight on up the hill into Lago Cinebra.\n\n\n\nFollow it around to the right and then take the first turning on the left\, Calle Lago Vanern.\n\n\n\n The road wiggles as it joins Lago Tanganyka\, keep going straight on. At the T-junction with Cami de Sabatera\, turn left\, and\, at the crossroads\, turn right to stay on Cami de Sabatera.\n\n\n\nCami de Sabatera can be busy at times\, so beware. After a short distance (approx 130m)\, just before some trees\, there is a dirt path on the left going across some fields towards a wooded area. [If you reach a chain entrance on Sabatera then you have gone about 80m too far].\n\n\n\nWalk along this straight dirt path\, it bends slightly to the right and then enters the trees. Keep going straight until you reach a ruined finca. Turn left at the finca and follow the path through the grass. The path can be difficult to see in the grass\, but it goes almost in a straight line.\n\n\n\nThe path then curves slightly left as it rises and joins a cart track at another ruined finca (on your right). The cart track T-junctions with a rough whitish road where you should turn right into Lago Aral. Notice the magnificent view of Montgó on your right.\n\n\n\nWhen the track approaches some stables\, turn left and curve right around the stables (still on Lago Aral). [There are alternative routes marked on the map.] Ignore the turning (Lago Michigan) to the left. Continue along Lago Aral until the track goes into a wooded “tunnel”.\n\n\n\nAt the other end of the “tunnel”\, take the track on the right. This is Calle Lago Baljas (often marked on maps as Baljash). Walk along this track past a new house on the left and then the track becomes a tarmac-ed road. The stables are just visible to the right through the fence.\n\n\n\nWalk straight over the next two crossroads (first with Lago Yojoa and then with Lago Saimaa) and into Calle de Lago Eire. This road very quickly becomes a narrow dirt path (ignore the track to the left) and runs along the back of the Jávea Golf Club.\n\n\n\nLook for a ruined finca on your left\, very close to the path. About 10m after the finca\, on your right\, is a narrow dirt path leading across the fields. Follow this path in an almost straight line for about 250m. The path then curves to the left through some trees and then out in the open.\n\n\n\nIt goes along a terrace and then junctions with another path\, where you should go up the slope then follow the path as it curves to the left into some more trees. Proceed the ends of the two walls. It emerges into a clearing under some electricity pylons. Go straight across the clearing towards a small wall. There is a path to the left but you should take the path to the right\, up a slight slope and left around some small trees. This path runs alongside some trees to your right.\n\n\n\nWhen you reach a junction with another path\, turn left and soon you will reach Cami de Sabatera. Turn right and carefully walk the short distance up the hill.\n\n\n\nAt the top of the hill\, go straight across and into Lago Como. This rough track quickly becomes a road as it descends steeply. Go down the hill ignoring the side turnings. Notice the abundance of traffic furniture and zebras grazing on every corner!\n\n\n\nTake the last turning on the left (still Lago Como) then turn right to return to the parking area.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInterested ? Go to the right andfollow ‘Cami de Gorgos’.\n\n\n\nFollow the path as it leaves the river. After about 500m you reach the Lliber purification plant to your left. Below you will see the river bed. The path here is level and continues past the purification plant.Keep to the right and continue on this path. Ignore all little paths left and right.\n\n\n\nAs the path starts to descend slightly\, you will reach the first crossing of the Jalon river. The concrete crossing offers a beautiful view and worth a short pause and a photograph.\n\n\n\nFollow the path through the bushy valley until the path descents slightly to a concrete crossing. The second crossing of the Jalon river. I has a blue electricity mast on the left side when you pass the cross-ing. Continue on the path with now regular electricity masts on the left. After a 600m the path turns to the right.\n\n\n\nNow\, after 100m\, the path turns left(reaching the main road to Gata CV-748) and has a small track aheadgoing into the woods. This path runs parallel to the CV-748. Continue on this path\n\n\n\nThe path now start climbing gradually for 800m. About halfway you reach the little zoo on the left ( mountain goats\, special chickens\, sealion\, donkey\, etc).\n\n\n\nAs the path continues\, coming out of the woods\, it reaches a square. Take the left road between the houses 100m steep uphill.\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nAt the top\, you reach the CV-748 Gata road. Turn right here and continue on the road until past the S- bend. You reach a junction\, to the right Cami la Bassa and a sign to restaurante Vall del Pop. Take this road. To the right there are rubbish bins. Pass the bins and go onto the back road of Llíber.\n\n\n\n\n\nFollow this tarmac road down the hill towards Llíber. There are one or two houses along the road. Ignore the first road (Calle Bassa) to the left going down a steep hill. Also ignore the Y-junction (at Y-junction 2 on map) and walk on to the next Y-junction (Y-junction 3 on map).\n\n\n\n\nHere you have a choice. \n\n\n\n\nChoice 1. Turn left at this junction (Y-junction 3) and follow the path down\, around the church. At the bottom\, turn left and walk down into the main Plaza.\n\n\n\nChoice 2. (At Y-junction 3 on map) take the right hand path up a short steep hill and follow it to the cementerio. There are great views here. At the cementerio\, turn sharp left and descend past the stations of cross and then past the church to the main Plaza. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Plaza. There are some bars around the Plaza.\n\n\n\nReturn to the car. From the Plaza\, walk down to the main road\, cross the crossing and turn right\, first left\, first right and then past the medical centre back to the car park..

SUMMARY:When Denia ruled the waves
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Keith Smith \n\n\n\nToday Denia is a thriving tourist destination on the Costa Blanca. Despite the growth of air traffic it retains an important link from mainland Spain to the Balearic Islands. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBut there was a time when Denia was more important than that. It was one of the strongest cities in the whole of the Mediterranean and its´naval forces were feared on the coasts of France and Italy. \n\n\n\nThis talk by Keith Smith\, who has given previous talks including Al Azraq Moorish Warlord of the Marina Alta\, covers the maritime history of Denia starting with its´early settlers and taking us through the impact of the Pheonicians\, Greeks\, Romans\, Visigoths and Moors on the town\, region and Mediterranean. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnd if you want to know the connection between Bridget Bardot and the sea power of Islamic Spain\, then come along and find out! \n\n\n\nInterested ? AT THE END OF THE STREET AT THE STOP SIGN GO STRAIGHT AHEAD AND THEN IMMEDIATELY RIGHT INTO THE PARKING.walk#39\n\n\n\nWalk Description\n\n\n\nAt the time of writing this guide\, road names are a scarce commodity in Jesús Pobre. The names used in the description below are the same as those used on the accompanying map. It is anybody’s guess what the real names are!!!!!!! \n\n\n\n\nAfter parking walk to the right of the apartment buildings and past the Riu Rau market building on the right\, cross the road and walk diagonally left up the hill.\n\n\n\nYou will reach a plaza\, Placa del Poble. Go to the end and turn left into Carrer Major.\n\n\n\nWalk up Carrer Major. Further on there is an old well on the right. The road continues and leaves the town and heads downhill in the campo.\n\n\n\nAs it leaves the town the road changes its name to Cami Bisserot. There seem to be a number of roads in this area with this name! As you leave the town\, ignore the road on the right called Bisserot!!!\n\n\n\nGo down the first part of the hill and soon you will see a white house on the left\, very close to the road. You have a choice here.Choice 1: Stay on the main road\n\n\n\nGo past the white house staying on the main road.\n\n\n\nYou will quickly come to a junction with a blue house with fish painted on it.\n\n\n\nTurn left here and follow the road down a steep hill. You will pass some nice old houses on the right.\n\n\n\nHalfway down there is a turning off to the right\, ignore this and stay on the main road. Both routes arrive at a T-junction where you will see the railway line 50m in front of you. The road you are joining (Cami Real) runs parallel with the railway line. Turn left at this T-junction..Choice 2: Divert through the country lanes\n\n\n\n(Dotted route on map). Immediately before the white house\, there is a concrete path to the left going down a very steep hill.\n\n\n\nFollow this to the bottom where the path turns right into a quiet country lane. [This route may be wet after rain.]Choices 1 & 2\n\n\n\nBoth routes arrive at a T-junction where you will see the railway line 50m in front of you. The road you are joining (Cami Real) runs parallel with the railway line. Turn left at this T-junction.\n\n\n\nWith the railway line on your right\, follow the road until you see the pigeon farm on your left and a bridge over the railway on your right.\n\n\n\nDo not cross the bridge but go left up the rocky track\, passing the pigeon farm on your left.\n\n\n\nThe lane bends slightly to the right and then\, when it turns sharp left take the roughly concreted track uphill and NOT the farm track straight on\, After about 25 metres take the narrow path straight ahead. There are whitepainted arrows on rocks to follow. [Do not follow the rough road as it continues uphill and left at this stage]\n\n\n\nThe path is narrow with a dirt and occasional rock surface. It meanders along with views of the house on the hillto the left and views to the right. Ignore any narrower paths to the right and left.\n\n\n\nThe path dog-legs right and left (ignore the concrete path to the right) and continues until it reaches a tarmac road. Turn right here.\n\n\n\nYou will pass a road joining from the right\, continue straight on\, then the road bends to the left\n\n\n\nFollow your road until you reach the junction at the cemetery.\n\n\n\nTurn left down Cami del Cementeri with the Cementeri to your right.\n\n\n\nAfter passing a house with an impressive gate the road turns sharp left (looks a bit like a T-junction). Notice that you are following the cycle route. It then bends around to the right.\n\n\n\nCarry on up a slight incline until you reach another sort of T-junction. Turn left (continuing to following the cycle route) around a quaint old summer house(?) which forms the corner building.\n\n\n\nAlmost immediately the road then turns right. You will see a “Quatre Canons” sign high up on the brick wall as you turn right.\n\n\n\nThe road passes three/four houses and then turns right yet again. Notice the “blue steps” on your left as you round the bend. You are on Carrer Del Baix (no signs to that effect?)\n\n\n\nFollow the road past some more houses on both sides and then the road turns left and then left again before turning right.\n\n\n\nThe road passes a new house on the left and approaches some new houses\apartments (on the right). Just before the apartments\, turn right into Carrer Pinaret (former carrer Dalt).\n\n\n\nCarrer Pinaret is a long straight road leading back to your car

SUMMARY:River cruise - Douro Queen
DESCRIPTION:U3A Trip Leaders: Carole and Paul Clark \n\n\n\nThis is a fantastic river cruise for our discerning members which we know will have something special for everyone.I am delighted to be able to offer you through the Cruise Market a stunning holiday on the Douro Queen\, sailing from Porto and back to Porto over an exciting week of discovery\, departing on 15 April 2027. \n\n\n\nAfter flying from Alicante to Porto we set sail on a journey that feels less like a holiday and more like stepping into a living postcard. From the moment you board the Douro Queen in Porto\, the pace shifts to something richer and more immersive. The river carries you through a landscape sculpted by centuries of winemaking\, where terraced vineyards climb steep hills and golden light reflects off the water as you glide past quiet villages and historic estates. Days are filled with discovery\, whether wandering through the atmospheric streets of Porto\, tasting world-famous port in traditional cellars\, or standing in awe of grand palaces and ancient castles that tell the story of Portugal’s past. \n\n\n\nEach stop adds a new layer of experience. In Pinhão\, azulejo-tiled stations and vineyard lunches bring local culture to life. In Régua and beyond\, the scenery becomes even more dramatic\, with the river cutting deep through the valley.
