Take the Calle de San Lorenzo road pass the picnic and playground area on the left. The road starts to climb and narrow as the surroundings become more rural.\n\n\n\nThe tarmac road bends sharply to the left but you should keep to the right and after approximately 300 meters the tarmac road ends. At this point you will see a house on your right and a pigeon/chicken farm on your left. Go straight ahead\, take the narrow track adjacent to the farm fence and walk towards the open countryside.\n\n\n\nContinue on the single track passing a ruined finca on your left and another on the right. Turn left here along the road and just before you reach the wooded area (there is a pylon on the left)\, turn left up a wide track that then bends right uphill. This track meets a wide track at right angles – go straight across.\n\n\n\nThe track narrows\, quite steeply uphill. Continue up the hill until you reach a path on the right. Take this sharp right turn downhill until it reaches a wide track where you turn left.\n\n\n\nYou are now on Carrer del Lago Superior\, a wide stony track through the woods. Continue on this path for about ¾ km during which you will pass a derelict villa on the right opposite a clearing and a second clearing on the left.\n\n\n\nStay on the track until you reach a crossroads and a red fire hydrant\, turn right and go down the slight hill. As you clear the wooded area ignore initial tracks to the left and right and take the track with a meter high stone wall on its left.\n\n\n\nFollow this track towards a house\, as the track reaches the house then it turns sharp right and goes downhill. After a short distance take the second single path on the left into a wooded area and continue walking along this track until you reach a small number of houses. At this point the track becomes a tarmac road.\n\n\n\nContinue down on this road (Calle del mar Arabigo) and at the bottom of the hill stay on the tarmac road as it bends to the right and heads towards a large house on the left. Turn left at the house and remain on the tarmac road.\n\n\n\nWalk down the road until you reach the track you walked earlier\, and turning right along it re trace your route back to the start

Then\, we will pass along the shore of the Golden Horn and visit the Iron Church of St. Stephen\, a Bulgarian Orthodox church in a Turkish city\, associated with the struggle for ecclesiastical independence in the 1830s and 1840s. It is the only iron Orthodox church in the world. Next\,we will visit the Grand Bazaar\, which has over 4\,500 shops specializing in different products such as jewelry and clothing. After lunch\, we will visit the Basilica of Hagia Sophia\, “DivineWisdom\,” undoubtedly one of the most fantastic buildings of all time. During the Ottoman Empire\, it was converted into a mosque\, and minarets were added over time. We will then visit the ancient Hippodrome from the Byzantine era\, which was the center of civil activity in the country. It hosted not only horse races and gladiator combats but also celebrations in honor of the Emperor. Today\, it preserves the Obelisk of Theodosius\, the Serpentine Column\, and the Fountain of Emperor Wilhelm. Finally\, we will visit the Blue Mosque\, built in 1609 during thereign of Sultan Ahmed\, who wanted to surpass the Hagia Sophia. It was built between 1550 and 1557 by Sinan\, the famous architect of the Ottoman Golden Age. Then\, we will head to the ancient walls of Constantinople\, at today’s Mevlana Gate. These walls were built by Emperor Theodosius II in 413. With several floors in height and a thickness between three and six meters\, they protected the city from constant attacks by the Huns\, Bulgarians\, Russians\, Arabs\, Goths\, and Turks. The walls were only breached twice—by the Crusaders in 1204 and by Mehmet the Conqueror in 1453. Next\, we will visit the Monastery of the Virgin of the Spring. According to historians Procopius and Cedrenus\, the church was originally built by Emperor Justinian in the final years of his reign near a spring once known as the “Miraculous Spring.” After lunch\, we will transfer to the port to embark on a Bosphorus Cruise\, the strait that separates two continents and connects the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara. From the boat\, we can admire Dolmabahce Palace\, Ortakoy’s bohemian neighborhood\, the Rumeli and Anatolian Fortresses\, Beylerbeyi Palace\, traditional wooden “yali” houses\, and more. We continue to the Goreme Open‐Air Museum\, home to an impressive collection of rock‐hewn churches\, chapels\, and monasteries with 11th‐century frescoes\, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In theafternoon\, we will visit the volcanic landscapes of Avcilar (Valley of the Hunters) and Güvercinlik (Pigeon Valley) and admire the panoramic view of Uchisar Castle\, carved into volcanic rock and dotted with tunnels and windows. We will then stop at an artisan workshop specializing in decorative items and jewelry. This talk will explore how the events and developments of 1946 laid the groundwork for the modern world.  It will also look at the lives of ordinary people in Britain and around the globe.  Maybe it was the year you were born?  Me too. \n\n\n\nMike Granville

Of Arab origin\, it was rebuilt by Don Juan Manuel in the 14th century. \n\n\n\nThe old town\, which has been declared a Historic-Artistic Site\, is made up of narrow streets that surround the castle. Inside it\, the palace of the Counts of Cirat stands out\, also known as the Casa Grande\, with a beautiful Mannerist doorway. Civil architecture is also represented by 17th-century manor houses\, such as that of the Enríquez de Navarra or the Marquises of Montortal; the old granary\, now the House of Culture; and the Town Hall. As for religious buildings\, of interest are the parish church of the Assumption\, from the 16th-19th centuries; the convent of the Augustinians\, with a baroque façade; that of San Francisco and the hermitage of San Blas. \n\n\n\nSerrin Carpets. Made of Sawdust. We visit the museum and then have free time for lunch before returning to the hotel. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlbacete. SUMMARY:Elihu Yale and his Wicked Wife
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: David Ebsworth \n\n\n\nElihu Yale is a major figure in our history\, though now mostly forgotten. One of the first nabobs\, (a Muslim official or governor under the Mogul empire) Yale bequeathed his name to one of the world’s most famous universities. At the same time\, he left nothing to poor Catherine except the slur of branding her a “wicked wife.” But Catherine’s own background is fascinating – daughter to one of the Levant Company’s merchant adventurers who helped introduce Alicante wines to the world. Her husband’s reputation is tarnished\, however\, by his involvement\, through the East India Company\, in the Indian slave trade but the true story of Catherine and Elihu Yale is still “stranger than fiction” – as author of the Yale Trilogy\, David Ebsworth\, explains in this one-hour session.

SUMMARY:Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
DESCRIPTION:5:30pm doors open\, for 6:00pm start (ends 8:05pm) \n\n\n\nU3A Membership Card for entrance (free) – NO booking required \n\n\n\nIn the early 1970s during the Cold War\, the head of British Intelligence\, Control (Sir John Hurt)\, resigns after an operation in Budapest\, Hungary goes badly wrong. It transpires that Control believed one of four senior figures in the service was in fact a Russian Agent\, a mole\, and the Hungaryoperation was an attempt to identify which one it was. George Smiley (Gary Oldman) had been forced into retirement by Control’s departure\, but is asked by a senior government figure to investigate a story told to him by rogue Agent Ricky Tarr (Tom Hardy)\, that there was a mole. Smiley considers that the failure of the Hungary operation and the continuing success of Operation Witchcraft (an apparent source of significant Soviet Intelligence) confirms this\, and takes up the task of finding him. \n\n\n\n.

SUMMARY:Sorolla\, Benlliure and Blasco: Valencia's Greatest Painter\, Sculptor and Writer
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Peter Atkinson \n\n\n\nWe are absolutely delighted to welcome back one of our favourite speakers\, Peter Atkinson\, who is returning to this area for a short time from his new life in Canada and has kindly fitted in one of his superb talks for our members whilst here. \n\n\n\nHis presentation will explore the work and lives of these three men. Each was a brilliant and prolific artist in his field and\, remarkably\, they were all born in the city during a five-year period in the 1860s: painter\, Joaquín Sorolla y Bastide (1863-1923); sculptor\, Mariano Benlliure y Gil (1862-1947); and writer\, Vicente Blasco Ibáñez (1867-1928). They knew each other and\, without being particularly close\, they were friends. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlmost all of Joaquín’s work is oil on canvas and was mostly done outdoors under the Mediterranean sun; he is known as a “painter of light”. He painted people at work and play\, did a lot of landscapes and garden scenes\, and accepted many commissions for portraits. His family (wife and three children) were often his subjects. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMariano had intended to be a painter but\, on a visit to Rome\, the work of Michelangelo inspired him to become a sculptor. While most of his work is bronze\, he was also a gifted chiseller of marble. He produced many busts and close to one hundred monumental works\, often large and complex and mostly in Spain (Valencia and Madrid in particular). \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVicente had the most varied life of the three. With 50 titles\, he was principally a novelist\, the early ones being set around the Albufera lake to the south of Valencia. He also wrote 15 non-fiction books and was a journalist; he founded a newspaper for which he wrote almost a thousand articles. And he was a left-wing\, republican politician: anti-monarchy\, anti-Church\, and anti-landowner. He spent a decade in the Cortes\, the national parliament\, and had three stints in jail. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nI hope that as many members as possible will join us to enjoy this excellent speaker.

SUMMARY:Wine Tasting- New Date -Tuesday\, 13th May 2025
DESCRIPTION:Our next Wine Tasting will now be on Tuesday\, 13th May\, when ‘the dynamic duo’\, Domingo and Franco\, will be presenting wines from the Corcovo bodega in Valdepeñas.  This tasting was originally scheduled for 10th April\, but it has come to our attention that the April date falls within the UK Easter school holiday period and many of our regular attendees will not be in Spain at that time.  If they are in Spain\, then it is very likely that their family will be visiting.   We want to ensure that Domingo has a well-attended event\, making his 850 km round trip from Valdepeñas worthwhile. \nWe are not yet open for bookings\, but please make a diary note.  Invitations will be sent to all group members in April. \nIf you wish to join the group\, please email   wine.tasting@u3amoraira-teulada.org

SUMMARY:The Earth is not Flat
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Alan Hunton \n\n\n\nAncient civilisations had little understanding of our planet and the general opinion was that it was flat or saucer shaped. All the heavenly bodies appeared to revolve around the Earth. Pythagoras and other Greek philosophers working in Alexandria in Egypt during the first millennium BC disproved the flat Earth theory and within a short period of time had discovered the size of the Earth and Moon and the distances between them. The influence of Aristotle and Ptolemy and the teachings of the Church stalled any further progress and it wasnot until the seventeenth century that Kepler and Galileo could show beyond doubt that the planets went round the Sun using the earliest telescopes as aids.We will also discover that in the 18 th Century\, Nevil Maskelyne found a way of ‘weighing’ the Earth by taking a very large plumb line on a series of rambles in the Scottish Highlands.

DESCRIPTION:5:30pm doors open\, for 6:00pm start (ends 7:45pm) \n\n\n\nU3A Membership Card for entrance (free) – NO booking required \n\n\n\nEveryone in the city is in a frenzy. Why? Because they’re up and ready to watch a concert performed by famous pop star Lady Raven. Two of her fans\, a man named Cooper and his daughter Riley\, attend the concert with high spirits\, but things slowly begin to change their tune. Amongst the screams ofadoration and sounds of applause\, the concert itself has a hidden identity: a front to fish out an infamous serial killer known as The Butcher. With security cameras rigged\, armies of policemen with weapons at the ready\, and police vehicles surrounding the venue\, will anyone survive their concert experience or is there more to The Butcher than meets the eye? \n\n\n\n(The plot was inspired by the Washington D.C. “Operation Flagship” sting operation on December 15\, 1985\, which was organised by the U.S. Marshals Service and the Metropolitan Police to lure wanted fugitives to the Washington Convention Centre under the pretence of free tickets. It resulted in 101 arrests\, one of the largest and most successful mass arrests of fugitives by U.S. law enforcement.)

SUMMARY:Carmen Amaya (1918-1963)
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Angela Chantry \n\n\n\nConsidered by many to be the greatest flamenco dancer of all time\, Carmen Amaya gave her own definition to the art of flamenco. Her career began at the age of four and throughout her childhood she performed alongside her father in the taverns and music halls of Barcelona. With the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s she travelled the world and achieved her greatest fame in the Americas. She made films in Hollywood\, appeared on Broadway\, danced for Roosevelt and Churchill\, but always remained true to her gypsy heritage. Flamenco today is deeply indebted to Carmen Amaya – through her artistry and virtuosity she effectively altered the history of flamenco dance forever.
