SUMMARY:The War Routes of Spain
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: David Ebsworth \n\n\n\nIn a remarkable addition to his existing talks about the Spanish Civil War\, David Ebsworth now takes us on one of Franco’s real-life 1938 battlefield tours. Join him – and 1930s Coventry school-teacher Mary Walker\, an ardent supporter of General Franco – as we meet some of their actual fellow-travellers\, hear from the tour guides\, encounter a few new heroes and villains\, visit some of the astonishing sites and works of art along the routes and the coastal Camino\, and reveal completely new secrets of history’s most audacious propaganda exercise. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInterested ? SUMMARY:Wine Group Trip to Bodegas Castaño - New Date
DESCRIPTION:Bodegas Castaño is located in Yecla\, a small town in the north of the province of Murcia.  The Castaño family has always been considered a pioneer in the area\, experimenting with the grape variety Monastrell to both create straight wines and blend it with other varieties\, introducing the latest technology\, not only in the vineyard but also in the winery and implementing new quality systems that allow a more suitable winemaking.  The bodega owns nearly 600 hectares of vineyards in different estates spread in D.O. Yecla.  We will leave Moraira at approximately 8:30 a.m. and will arrive in Yecla at about 10:30.  We will stop for a coffee/breakfast break (not included) for approximately 45 minutes and then take a short drive to the bodega in time to meet our host\, Raquel\, at 11:30. We will then have a tour of the winery\, the whole winemaking area\, the barrel cellar and the bottle sanctuary. This will then be followed by a wine tasting of 3 wines in the old winery. \n\n\n\nThe visit ends in the private lounge of Bodegas Castaño with a 3-course menu prepared by the chef and paired with another 4 wines\, so in total you will have the opportunity of tasting 7 different wines.  There will be a selection of 3 starters for sharing around the table and the main course will be a homemade chicken paella\, followed by seasonal fruit and cheese flan.   After lunch\, you will have time to visit the shop\, where you will have the opportunity to purchase the wines of your choice.  We will depart at approximately 16:30 for our 2-hour journey home.  We will stop for a short comfort break en route if necessary. The cost will be 62\,50€ per person for U3A members and 65€ per person for non-members. We have done our very best to negotiate the price. In addition\, the bodega has kindly offered our group a 20% discount on all wine purchases made on the day.If you would like to make a booking for this trip\, please email us wine.tasting@u3amoraira-teulada.org   If you would like to learn more about Bodegas Castaño and their wines\, please have a look at their website. https://www.bodegascastano.com/en/ \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIf you would like to become a member of the Wine Tasting group\, please contact Pat & Brian on the email below.

SUMMARY:ART HEISTS!
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Rosalind Miranda \n\n\n\nNot surprisingly\, this talk was inspired by the recent heist of the crown jewels from the Louvre last year. When I started looking into it\, I learned that the FBI estimates that $4 to $6 billion worth of art is stolen each year! I will go into why this happens\, & some of the history of thefts. We’ll delve into why some of the art is never recovered\, & why art heists became much more common from the mid-1960s. After this background\, you’ll hear about five thefts: a much earlier heist from the Louvre\, of the Mona Lisa; the largest unsolved art heist in history; the piece of art that has been singled out the most times for either theft or destruction; & two recent thefts that I hope will have you laughing in disbelief. So come along for a look at the shady side of the art world.

On 11 February 1858\, Bernadette went to the Massabielle rock\, on the banks of the river Gave\, to gather dead wood. The spot was known as the “pigs’ shelter” as it was so dirty and dark. It was there that Bernadette heard a sound “like a gust of wind”. Then she saw a lady in the rock\, which was the first apparition. 17 others would follow\, until 16 July 1858. \n\n\n\nAs I have worked in the hospital in Lourdes I know the town quite well. At 9pm every night there is a procession by candle light in the Basilica gardens The Basilica is within walking distance of our hotel and after our dinner in the hotel\, I would be happy to take you to walk in the procession if people were interested. We would join lots of people from all over the world and it is a very moving affair. We can then return to the hotel for our overnight stay. \n\n\n\nDay 3 – 23 September: Lourdes Guided Experience & Donjon des Aigles\n\n\n\nThis morning\, we can discover Lourdes with a local guide. SUMMARY:When Denia ruled the waves
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Keith Smith \n\n\n\nToday Denia is a thriving tourist destination on the Costa Blanca. Despite the growth of air traffic it retains an important link from mainland Spain to the Balearic Islands. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBut there was a time when Denia was more important than that. It was one of the strongest cities in the whole of the Mediterranean and its´naval forces were feared on the coasts of France and Italy. \n\n\n\nThis talk by Keith Smith\, who has given previous talks including Al Azraq Moorish Warlord of the Marina Alta\, covers the maritime history of Denia starting with its´early settlers and taking us through the impact of the Pheonicians\, Greeks\, Romans\, Visigoths and Moors on the town\, region and Mediterranean. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnd if you want to know the connection between Bridget Bardot and the sea power of Islamic Spain\, then come along and find out! \n\n\n\nInterested ?
