The Story of The Bayeux Tapestry

The Bayeux Tapestry is one of the most famous pieces of Medieval art in the world and it
depicts many of the events which occurred between William, the Duke of Normandy
and Harold Godwinson who became King Harold 2 nd of England.
The tapestry, which is an amazing 70 metres or 230 feet long, depicts two years of the lives
of both William and Harold leading up to and including the Norman Conquest of England in
1066, which, of course, was led by William, Duke of Normandy when he challenged Harold
2 nd for his throne, culminating in the Battle of Hastings.
Contrary to popular belief, the tapestry is believed to have been made in England, probably
in Canterbury but it is now displayed in the Musee de la Tapestry in the town of Bayeux in
France.
In this talk we look in some detail at the lives of both William and Harold before they met in
the decisive battle at Hastings which, of course, altered the course of British history.
