Annual Report and audited accounts for 2020

Annual Report 2020

Annual Report 2020

The audited accounts for 2020 are on the website. The Notes to the Accounts,  included in the  Audited Accounts, this year also form the Treasurers Report.

This report covers other areas of activity during the year

  1.  Membership data

In 2019, we had 2105 members. During the first three months of 2020, we had 176 new members  and 1675 renewals.  We then entered lockdown and as a result the numbers of renewals and new members fell compared to the previous year.  By the end of the year we had 1880 members.  We were very fortunate that most of our renewal activity took place before Covid restrictions came into force and we were unable to hold General Meetings. Renewals and new members applications after March were managed by Bank Transfer.

Towards the end of the year, it became obvious that even if the restrictions were eased slightly, we would not be able to process renewals and new membership applications in the same way as we had previously.  The Membership Secretary, Pat Clarke, and the Webmaster, Peter Bayliss, spent a lot of time in 2020 working on an electronic membership card, which would avoid the need for members having to collect their card in person.

2. Groups

In 2020, the first two months were relatively normal for our groups, and then the Covid restrictions came into force.  Throughout the year, these restrictions have changed a number of times, and although some groups were able to continue for most of the year, others, mainly larger groups and those who used La Senieta were unable to.

We have 45 groups and 5 Associate groups. Thanks are due to all our Group leaders and helpers.

3. Travel

Travel was obviously affected.  A total of four trips were completed in January and February.  Members were asked if they wanted a refund or wished to keep their payments in the Travel group account until we could start organising trips again.  A number of refunds were made.

4. Future plans

It was announced towards the end of 2020 that members who were fully paid up in 2020, would receive their 2021 membership free of charge.  This proposal was put to the members, and no objections were received although a few said they would be more than happy to pay the €10.

The Committee is hopeful that there will be a return to our normal activities in 2021, although this will depend on Covid restrictions being lifted.  A number of members have been affected by the travel restrictions to Spain, and of course those who are not resident in Spain will be affected by Brexit.  It remains to be seen what impact this will have on our activities and membership levels in the future.
