Minutes of the Monthly Meeting held on

It is confirmed that the President and the Secretary attended the meeting as voted in at the AGM on 7th March 2018.

David Haxon, the President, welcomed everybody to the Meeting especially the 8 new members. He confirmed the usual Security checks had been made, advised the position of the emergency exits and asked for all mobile phones to be switched off.

Prue Jackson read out the synopsis of the Minutes of the Meeting on 4th June 2018. The full minutes had been posted on the website and were proposed by Ray Guise-Smith, seconded by Beverly Stewart and approved by the members.

President’s Address

David said he had had another busy month, beginning with the evening of entertainment at the music festival to start the Moors and Christians Week. The Moors and Christians was a spectacular event as usual and made David feel extremely lucky to be able to watch it. Some members of the U3A attended a first aid course which was instructive and well presented. The quiz in aid of ‘Make a Smile Charity’, organised by Sue and Colin McNae, raised €667 for the Charity. David asked members to note that a Charity Collection Basket will be on the table at the entrance to the meeting hall, until the end of the year of ‘Make a Smile Charity’. David ended by congratulating Titch and Peter on their recent marriage and wished them well for the future.

Reports

Treasurer – Carin read out her report which will be on the website. As at 4th June the money held was € 9.857,11, with income for June €1.357,50 and expenses €389,95 the balance held as at 2nd July is €10.824,66.

Travel – Carol gave details of all the trips for this year which included, on 21st October a Sunday lunch at Viva Expaña at €45 per person which includes a horse display, lunch, flamenco Dance show and the bus. On 14th November a shopping and sightseeing trip to Valencia at €10 per person. In 2019, on 9th January a shopping trip to IKEA in Murcia, in the morning an option to go shopping at the Condominio Centre, at €10 per person. On 6th to 31st May a 26 day 25 nights trip to Italy, full details of this trip and all others can be found on the website and on the display boards at the General Monthly Meeting.
Cultural Arts

Beverly gave details of many events. 8th July the Lions presents Bella Luna on the Moraira seafront and 8th September the Chaplaincy singers present ‘Welcome!’ At the Ermita San Josep, La Fustera. During the Royal Opera House’s Live Cinema Season 2018/2019 they will broadcast eleven productions, live from Covent Garden. Full details of all the Cultural Arts Events can be found on the website.
Membership/Committee Liaison

After receiving a question from a member concerning announcements at the General Monthly Meetings, Dot was able to confirm that the Committee had clarified that they would always announce Members deaths, providing a Committee Member had been notified. Rona Hurst, the Care Coordinator, asked Dot to remind members that her Group will provide necessary support and help when a death occurs. Help is provided for any Member that finds themselves in need of support for various reasons. The Group is in need of help with both hospital and home visits. Interpreters are also urgently required. If any member is able to help or requires support, please use telephone number 634 324 693 to speak to Rona or another helper looking after the telephone.

Group Coordinator

Lynn said there was not a lot happening at the moment, as some Groups are not active during the hot summer months, so suggested Members check the website to see if their particular Group meets during the summer. The Chess Group Leader, Ed Morley asked Lynn to inform the members that he will be at La Senieta on the first floor last room in, on this coming Thursday between 10:00 and 12:00. He is there to welcome any U3A member who wishes to play chess what-ever standard. Lynn then presented David and Eileen with a thank you gift, for all the hard work they had done in leading the Dining Out Group for so long. However, they are now standing down and handing over the reins to Meri and John Snell.

Matters Arising

There were no matters arising from the Reports.

There was no other business so Eileen introduced Philip Ashley – “ When Words Fail – Music Speaks”. Philip gave a moving talk and finished with an emotional song, the Anthem from the musical ‘Chess’, tissues where required by many!

David asked Philip to draw the raffle, the winning ticket was number 500 and Ian Garrett received a voucher for JYSK. As this was the last General Monthly Meeting until September, a further raffle ticket was drawn and Michael Burdit received a bottle of Whisky.
