Minutes of General Meeting 6th June 2016

University of the Third Age Moraira-Teulada

Minutes of the Meeting held on 6th June 2016

At the Salon G.L., Teulada

It is confirmed that the President and Secretary attended this General Meeting as voted in at the AGM on 7th March 2016.

John Hopwood welcomed everybody to the Meeting, especially the 31 new members. The number of members now totalled 1809. The emergency procedures were explained and John requested all mobile phones to be switched off, including his own.

David Haxon read out the synopsis of the Minutes from the 2nd May Meeting. The full minutes had been posted on the Website and were proposed by Eileen Haxon and seconded by Bill McPherson. The minutes were approved by the members with a show of hands.

President’s Address

John mentioned the sad passing away of Cathy Middleton and condolences go to her husband. This news prompted John to think of the situation of two group leaders in particular; Shirley Baehr and her sudden and unexpected death and Lynn Clark’s husband Brian having suffered a stroke and now is seriously ill, Lynn is to become his full time Carer. John wondered how he or any other members of the U3A, would cope in similar situations.  The HELP organisation is there for anyone but John wondered if the Moraira-Teulada U3A could organise a Group to help members. To help with Shopping, ironing, cleaning or gardening for anyone unable to do this type of daily or weekly activity. Would any members consider becoming a Group Leader and arrange this kind of help. Perhaps the Members present could take time to think about this and discuss with Lynn or John after the Meeting. Lynn Clark has now stepped down from the Group Coordinator’s position and thanked everyone for their help and would give assistance to the new Coordinator. John advised that Prue Jackson would be taking over this roll and both will work well together.

REPORTS

Treasurer

Carin Derksen advised that the total of €23,223.80 was held by the U3A as at 2nd May 2016. Income for May was €2,300.00 with expenses of €362.65. Within the expenses total was an amount for the Dining Out Group, agreed by the Committee, to help with several visits to Restaurants, due to the large number of Members wishing to attend the evenings. The total amount now held being €25,161.15. However, this week Canor had to be paid which exceeded €7,000. The full report was on the website. A question was asked – What was Canor? John explained this was the venue for the Summer Dinner Dance.

Group Coordinator

Lynn thanked John for his kind words as well as everybody’s good wishes, at this difficult time. Lynn advised that there had been no new groups so far this year, as she had concentrated on developing the existing groups, giving help to them as and when necessary.

The cost was provisionally put at €2,800 with a single supplement of €1,000. Unfortunately the 2017 trip to Lisbon had to be cancelled due to insufficient people wishing to go. The decision being made now as flights would have had to be booked. There were no Matters Arising from the Reports and nothing to discuss under Any Other Business so John asked Eileen to introduce the speakers Blanca and Roger Rodrigues. Their talk would be on the Moors and Christians in Moraira and Roger would be the Speaker.

John thanked Roger for an interesting and informative speech and video of a parade of Moors and Christians. There was a round of applause from the Members in appreciation. Two questions were asked – who did the make-up for the participants in the parades – Blanca advised the Captain’s was done professionally but the other were made up by members of the Filas. How did they find the musicians – Blanca advised that the Bands were hired by the Filas, sometimes this resulted in several Fiales having the same Band, so the Bands would need to complete the parade several times.

The Raffle was drawn, but as the winning ticket number 516 was held by a member that had already left the meeting, the voucher of €50 will be held until the next General Monthly Meeting.

The Meeting ended at 11.30
