Wine Tasting can give you a bit of an appetite. Not only that, it’s probably advisable to have a few little savoury snacks on hand when you are trying different wines – it adds to your enjoyment of the wines themselves and it stops you getting quite so tiddly as you might otherwise do.
Usually, those who attend the monthly meeting of the Moraira-Teulada Wine Tasting Group held in the Bar Mediterráneo in Teulada, bring along their own ‘nibbles’ but as the May meeting was going to be the last true tasting of the season it was decided to ask Luis and Rocío, who own the bar, if they would lay on some sandwiches and tapas for us. I don’t think our leaders, Pat and Brian Clarke, expected them to provide quite as much food as they did and, although everyone tucked in, there was still plenty left over at the end of the evening. Our thanks to Rocío and her staff for the magnificent spread.
We were also most fortunate at this meeting to be able to welcome for the first time Sr. Daniel Fullana Font, the Sales Manager of Bodegas Xaló in Jalon, along with his wife Celia and their daughter Monica, who brought with them six of their delicious wines for us to try: two whites, one rosado and three reds. With her excellent English, Celia took us through the background of each wine as we tried them and at the end of the evening there was quite a long queue of members waiting to place their orders for cases of their favourites. Celia and her daughter actually run the ‘Celler el Vinyater’ in Jalon which offers fine wines, as well as everything one would expect from a café/bar.
It was a pleasure to meet the family and sample their wines and we look forward to welcoming them back to more of our meetings in the future.
All in all, the seventy eight members present enjoyed a superb evening and we look forward to the June meeting which will be something ‘a little different’ to usher in the summer break.
