Wine Tasting – May 2025
Wine tasters set a new record this week when they bought an impressive 77 cases and two Magnums at the last gathering of the season.
Domingo, who made the 850 km round trip from his Corcovo bodega in Valdepeñas, was over the moon with the U3A Moraira-Teulada tasters take up of his wines.
He had a treat for the 62-strong assembly, a first glimpse of his brand new wine, a pale Rosé in the French style to replace the much deeper coloured Rosado of past seasons.
Following a trend for paler pink, the new wine, with the new colour, but from the same Tempranillo grape, has an intense nose full of fruity aromas with hints of strawberries and raspberries and a 13% strength. It won a well deserved round of applause on Tuesday night to go with the silver medal it recently collected at the prestigious Brussels International wine competition.
Domingo presented a selection of six of his wines ably assisted by Antonio. Missing from the evening was his regular presenting partner in crime, the ever ebullient Franco. He was unfortunately stuck at home following a recent knee replacement.
Rumour has it he lost 20 kilos in preparation for the surgery – would anyone have recognised him had he managed to attend? Domingo assured everyone Franco was in good spirits, “He’s happy,” he said.
First of three whites on offer was the Airén, a fresh, delicate young wine, light in colour and with a hint of green apples. It goes brilliantly with soft blue cheese.
Next up was the Verdejo – which means something green – we were told. A clear colour with indeed a green hue, the wine has aromas of tropical fruits and a nice balance between fruit and acidity.
The final white was the Muscat , picked in the cool of the night and macerated before sunrise, a delicate, subtle, dry young wine which Domingo said was “very very important to us.” From the Moscatel grape, it has been grown since the times of the ancient Greeks and Romans. Usually a sweet wine, Domingo’s Megia family have struck out in a different direction. The result this year was a gold medal at the esteemed 2025 Bacchus wine awards.
Two reds rounded off the evening. The Syrah, packing a 14.5% punch , is powerful, very dark, very concentrated wine – not for the faint hearted and great with a BBQ.
Last up was the Tempranillo Crianza 2021, ready to drink now and a Bacchus gold winner in 2024. Also packing a 14.5% punch, this well structured fruity wine aged in oak is a firm favourite with Moraira winos and on the night, tied with the Verdejo for the most orders.
Our thanks go to the Hill Top Bar for hosting us and providing a fine selection of cheeses, meats and crusty bread to complement the wines and, as always, to Pat and Brian Clarke for organising the tastings. See you again in September.
