Message From Our President

 By John Hopwood

Following the recent dreadful events on Westminster Bridge and at Parliament gates in London, Sue and I watched Prime Minister Theresa May’s quite excellent speech to the Commons and the comments which followed from many other MPs.

Through our tears the most memorable to us were those of James Cleverly M.P. who remembered serving with P.C Keith Palmer when they were both Gunners in The Royal Artillery twenty five years ago and he said what a delight it had been for him to meet again when he had been elected as an MP.

The other was the comment by one MP that he had seen a message chalked on one of the Underground notice boards which said something like “To any Terrorists – you can’t frighten us because whatever you do to us all we will do is make a cup of tea – and carry on as normal!”

I know that all of our U3A member’s thoughts will be with those who died and also those with such severe injuries.

We are so lucky to live in such a relatively quiet and peaceful place.

We talk about the ‘golden age’ as if it was something admirable, glorious and fun. Mike’s talk aims to look behind the façade at what was basically theft, often linked with torture, arson, rape and murder. The talk will also look at the lives of some of the more notorious names in pirate history – from Captain Morgan to Captain Kidd, from Calico Jack to Blackbeard. It will also examine what was meant by the Pirates’ Code – and look at how the skull and crossbones emerged as the symbol of 18th Century piracy.

Easter Recipe : Hot Cross Bun & Butter Pudding

By Dot Garrett

I usually make Bread & Butter pudding with Brioche bread or buns.

Hot Cross Buns make a fab substitute too!!

Ingredients:

• 600 ml semi-skimmed milk

• 200 ml double cream

• 400 ml single cream

• 1tsp. vanilla essence

• 4 medium eggs

• 170 g caster sugar

• 6 hot cross buns , sliced in half and spread with a knob of butter

• 1 knob butter , spread on the hot cross buns

• 3 tablespoons Brandy or Baileys

• 1 handful dried apricots , chopped

• 1 orange , zest of

• a little icing sugar

Method:

• Preheat the oven to 170°C/325°F/gas 3.

• For the custard base, bring the milk and all the cream just to the boil in a saucepan. Add the vanilla extract to the pan. Whisk the eggs with the sugar until pale, then whisk in the milk and cream mixture.

• Dip the hot cross bun halves in the mixture, then place in an ovenproof dish. Drizzle over the Brandy or Baileys and sprinkle over the apricots and the orange zest. Sieve the custard over, and leave it all to soak for at least 15 minutes.

• Place the dish in a roasting tin, half-fill the tin with hot water, then bake the pudding for about 45 minutes. When cooked it will have a slight crust on top but will still be slightly wobbly inside.

• Dust with the icing sugar and serve.

Campaign for renewal of registration of foreign nationals in municipalities of the province of Alicante

From the town hall.

Dear Fellow Citizens,

The Town Hall would like to remind you how important it is to register with the residents´ registration office and that you need to renew your registration every two or five years (depending on our personal situation), to help the municipality with the update of its data.

Your registration or renewal is important to help the INE to have the current actual data from every municipality.

This information is vital for the municipality to continue receiving the money urgently needed to keep services they offer their citizens up and running and ensures us to be able to continue enjoying those services.

Herewith attached, please, receive information from the county council Alicante regarding this subject in several languages.
